More than 500 people attended the BedX Opportunities Exchange Launch on Tuesday 28 April 2026, hosted by the Bedfordshire Chamber of Commerce. The event gave local businesses a first look at some major plans that could bring huge changes to the area over the next few years.
Representatives from Universal Studios Destinations & Experiences and Luton Rising, the owners of London Luton Airport, shared their plans for future developments across the region. It was also the first time Universal had spoken to local businesses about the project.
Hosted by Gidon Freeman and Nick Platts, the event focused on one key message: local businesses should start preparing now to take advantage of future opportunities.
Universal Studios hopes to open its new theme park within the next five years. The project is expected to create thousands of jobs, not just inside the park, but also in industries like catering, transport, construction, hospitality, and creative services.
With millions of visitors expected each year, many arriving through Luton Airport, Dunstable could see major benefits. More tourists could mean increased demand for hotels, restaurants, shops, and local services. This may also attract new residents moving here for work opportunities.
Both Universal and Luton Rising said they are already working with The Bedford College Group and local universities to help prepare people for these new jobs. New courses in areas such as aviation, catering, IT, and construction are being developed, along with more apprenticeship opportunities for young people and existing workers.
The scale of the plans is huge. The theme park alone could attract up to 30,000 visitors a day and is expected to bring an estimated £50 billion boost to the UK economy over time.
The wider development around the park is expected to continue over the next 10 to 15 years, while Luton Airport has its own 20-year expansion plans to increase flights and passenger numbers.
For local businesses, the advice is simple: get ready now. Companies are being encouraged to become “tender-ready” so they can apply for contracts and work towards these developments. BedX will also offer support and guidance throughout the process for any business who would like to be part of this exciting new opportunity.
If Dunstable businesses prepare early, the town could play a major role in one of the biggest growth opportunities the region has seen in years.
