On Saturday 16 May, Dunstable Town Council successfully held its popular ‘Around the World’ event, celebrating diversity, global traditions, and culture.

Against the beautiful backdrop of Priory Gardens, visitors were taken on a journey across the globe through live entertainment, traditional arts, and cultural experiences.

Attendees were treated to the rhythmic energy of Polynesian dance and workshops, the spiritual resonance of Native American drumming and traditional songs, and the elegance of Chinese folk dance. The festivities also included a captivating Lion Dance and a rare ‘Face Changing’ performance, highlighting the intricacies of Chinese theatrical arts.

A standout attraction on the day was Dubafrique, whose high-energy acrobatics, drumming, dancing, and interactive workshops drew enthusiastic crowds in celebration of the African spirit and community, with visitors of all ages joining in and taking part throughout the day.

The event also provided insights into Indigenous cultures through dedicated craft sessions and storytelling, alongside high-energy Colombian dance workshops and the spirited ‘Wild West Fest.’ Local sporting excellence was highlighted through a demonstration by the Shizen-No Judo Club and taster sessions led by Zumba with Helen.

Families were entertained throughout the day by the whimsical Sam O’Shanty puppet show, a roaming giant panda walkabout, and a variety of creative activities including puppet-making and global craft sessions.

Through these educational and cultural experiences, the Town Council sought to foster a deeper understanding and appreciation of the multicultural influences that contribute to the rich fabric of global traditions.

The significance of the occasion was highlighted by the participation of the Town Mayor, Cllr Sally Kimondo, who attended the event to engage with participants and celebrate the town’s inclusive spirit.

"The 'Around the World' event serves as a testament to the strength and unity of our community. By bringing together such a variety of cultures, traditions, and perspectives, we have successfully created an environment that encourages mutual respect and understanding. It is a privilege to witness our residents engaging so positively with these global traditions, and I am pleased that Dunstable continues to prioritise initiatives that promote such meaningful community integration."
