Dunstable Town Council is pleased to announce the election of Councillor Richard Attwell as the new Town Mayor for the 2026 to 2027 civic year. Cllr Attwell was officially instated during the Annual Council Meeting held at The Dunstable Conference Centre on Monday 18 May.
During his term, Councillor Attwell intends to focus on strengthening community ties, supporting local businesses, and championing initiatives that enhance the well-being of all Dunstable residents. Richard Attwell has lived in Dunstable for 14 years, having moved from Edgware and Stanmore in North West London.
He served as Deputy Mayor in the preceding year and has built strong links with community groups, charities and civic partners through that role. His decision to take on the office of Town Mayor reflects both his commitment to the town and personal experiences close to his family, including caring for his mother through dementia. These experiences have influenced his choice of mayoral charities and his focus on supporting local people and community organisations across Dunstable.
“It is a profound honour and a privilege to be elected as the Town Mayor of Dunstable. I have always been proud to call this town my home, and I am eager to spend the coming year meeting the wonderful volunteers, organisations, and residents who make Dunstable so special. My focus will be on ensuring our town remains a vibrant, inclusive, and thriving place for everyone, and I look forward to representing our community at the many wonderful events we have planned.” Town Mayor Councillor Richard Attwell
In addition to the appointment of the Mayor, the Council is also pleased to welcome Councillor Robert Blennerhassett as Deputy Mayor for the forthcoming year.
The Mayor will be supporting Luton and Dunstable Prostate Support Group and Tibbs Dementia Foundation throughout his mayoral year. Residents can look forward to a variety of fundraising events in aid of his chosen charity which will be posted on the Town Council website and social media.
The evening also served as a celebration of the Dunstable Community Lottery, marking exactly one year since its official launch at the previous Annual Council Meeting. A presentation was held to highlight the lottery’s significant impact over the past 12 months.

Information about the Mayor’s Charities
Tibbs Dementia Foundation
Tibbs Dementia Foundation is a dedicated charity providing a wide range of services and activities for people living with dementia, as well as their families and carers, throughout Bedfordshire. Their mission is to support individuals at all stages of their journey from pre-diagnosis to end-of-life care by focusing on what people can do rather than what they can’t. They offer cognitive stimulation, music therapy (including the popular ‘Music 4 Memory’), physical activities, and peer support groups to help reduce isolation and improve the overall quality of life within the community.
Luton and Dunstable Prostate Support Group (LDPSG)
The Luton and Dunstable Prostate Support Group is a volunteer-led organization that provides vital emotional and practical support to men affected by prostate cancer, their partners, and their families. The group offers a safe space for members to share experiences through monthly meetings (both in-person and online), one-to-one peer support, and signposting to clinical information. Beyond support, the group is heavily involved in raising local awareness of the disease to encourage early detection and improved outcomes for men in the Dunstable and Luton area.
