Dunstable Town Council Introduces a More Inclusive and Innovative Website

Posted on

Dunstable Town Council is proud to announce a significant update to its website aimed at making it more inclusive and accessible for all users. Earlier this year, as part of its ongoing commitment to accessibility, diversity, and digital inclusion, the Council commissioned website developers 6bythree to create a fully compliant, accessible website. The new site has been built to meet all current accessibility legislation and seamlessly integrates with the Recite Me Accessibility Toolbar – a leading assistive technology that supports users with a wide range of needs.

The inclusive Recite Me toolbar allows visitors to customise their browsing experience by offering features such as text-to-speech, translation into over 100 languages, adjustable font sizes, colour contrast settings, and reading aids. This ensures that people with visual impairments, additional learning needs, cognitive disabilities, and non-native English speakers can easily navigate and understand the Council’s online content.

In addition, Dunstable Town Council has improved accessibility site-wide by introducing a high-contrast, colour-accessible design and clearer layouts. All images include descriptive alt tags, making the website fully accessible for screen reader users and more user-friendly for everyone including mobile phone users.

“We have a duty to be inclusive and accessible to every member of our community. These improvements to the website are very much welcomed – not only do they enable those who previously couldn’t access our online services to now do so with confidence, but they also reflect another important example of how Dunstable Town Council strives to meet the needs of all.” Dunstable Town Mayor Cllr Sally Kimondo

The Council is committed to continuously reviewing and developing the website to ensure it remains accessible, user-friendly, and informative for all. Please send your comments or suggestions on the website to communications@dunstable.gov.uk
