Welcome and thank you for your interest in this key role with Dunstable Town Council.

Dunstable is currently benefiting from £millions of inward investment including £288 million of investment on the Luton/Dunstable Busway, A5-M1 Link Road and Woodside connection transport schemes.  The town, with its population of about 40,000, is still growing and town centre vacancy rates are at a 10 year low.

Working with Central Bedfordshire Council, Dunstable Town Council is at the forefront of this drive to regenerate Dunstable and I am really excited about the future for the town and what more the Town Council can achieve.

Already one of the largest town councils in the country, Dunstable Town Council is an ambitious authority that is very unlike most other town and parish councils in England.  Employing in the region of 85 staff, with a revenue turnover in excess of £3million and reserves of over £1.5million, the Council is in a healthy financial position and regularly wins national awards for the quality of local services that it provides.

After over 30 years of service, our current Head of Finance and Support Services is taking a well-earned retirement and the Council is now looking to appoint a creative and dynamic replacement to join our Senior Management Team to help take the Council forward.  This will be a very interesting time to join us with a new Council settling in after the 2019 elections and the advent of putting together a new Corporate Plan to be adopted later this year.

Not only a qualified accountant, the Council is seeking to employ someone with the experience and ability to oversee the Council’s democratic/civic, IT, HR, and administrative functions.  This role will also give the successful candidate the opportunity to contribute to improving and modernising services across the Council making sure that all commercial and trading opportunities are maximised.

The successful candidate will work within a tight knit, supportive Senior Management Team and I am keen to employ someone with a ‘can do’ attitude who is willing to develop his or her work experience beyond conventional finance and accountancy roles.

This position is very important for the Council and is a Member appointment.  Set out below is the recruitment timetable that we are keen to adhere to:

  • Closing date – Monday 25 February
  • Shortlisting – Tuesday 26 February
  • Informal interviews – Friday 8 March
  • Formal interviews – Thursday or Friday 14/15 March
  • Start date – no later than Monday 20 May
