The Woodside Link is a critical piece of new infrastructure, providing a main route through the planned new housing development area north of Houghton Regis. By providing a convenient link between the industrial areas and the trunk road network, the road will not only take heavy goods vehicles away from the centre of Houghton Regis and Dunstable but it will also stimulate further economic investment and will help provide much needed employment and job opportunities for residents throughout the area. The Woodside Link goes hand in hand with the A5–M1 link and the de-trunking of the A5 which is a fundamental part of our aspirations to regenerate Dunstable town centre.
Central Bedfordshire Council is continuing to work with the Highways Agency to progress the following transport proposals in the area: M1 improvements Junctions 10 to 13 – Following the recent completion of widening works south of Luton, the Highways Agency is at an advanced stage in testing of the newly-installed managed motorway systems (hard shoulder running) and this section will soon be fully operational. A5 to M1 link (Dunstable Northern Bypass) – The proposal will comprise a two-lane dual carriageway from the M1 at a new junction 11A, to the north of Luton, connecting with the A5 north of Dunstable. Housing – The proposed development to the north and east of Houghton Regis is the subject of a planning application, which is due to be submitted Central Bedfordshire Council. This development will provide 5,600 new homes and 30 hectares of employment land by 2031.
