Dunstable parks are among the best in the country

Priory Gardens and Grove House Gardens in Dunstable are among the best parks and gardens in the country – and that’s official!

Priory Gardens and Grove House Gardens have both received the Green Flag Award, a sign to visitors that they are well-maintained and well-managed, with excellent facilities. Both are considered to be high-quality green spaces in Dunstable.

Both gardens are among a record number of parks and green spaces that received the Green Flag Award in 2011, ensuring that even more of us now have access to well-managed, high-quality green spaces.

Both gardens were inspected by Green Flag judges who also scrutinised the Town Councils plans for managing and developing the gardens over the next 5 years.

Councillor Terry Colbourne, Chairman of the Town Council’s Grounds and Environmental Services Committee, said:

“I am delighted that we have retained our Green Flag for Grove House Gardens this year whilst at the same time securing our first Green Flag for Priory Gardens at the very first attempt.  These awards recognise the hard work that all our employees and our partners put into managing the Gardens to a very high standard so that local people can enjoy them all year round. The Gardens make a significant contribution to our towns green spaces and the town should be proud that it now has two award winning open spaces”.

Mr David Ashlee, Town Clerk, Dunstable Town Council, added:

“I am very proud of the Councils achievement in obtaining two Green Flags and hope that both gardens continue to be well used and respected by those visiting them”.

Phil Barton, Green Flag Plus Partnership chairman said:

“I would like to congratulate the winners, who have worked hard throughout the year to keep their parks and green spaces at a high standard and ensure they are pleasant and enjoyable spaces for the whole community.

“The Green Flag Award Scheme, and its growth, is essential in driving up the standards of our parks and green spaces. Access to quality green space is something we all desire and the scheme plays a key role in providing it.

“In these challenging financial times it is heartening that the number of Green Flag

Awards continue to grow. As the value of green space and the role it plays in our communities strengthens, we must ensure these high standards remain.”

All award-winning sites now have the chance to receive a further award from the Green Flag Plus Partnership, the People’s Choice Award. This award is voted for by the public, so if you want to see your local park receive a national accolade as the people’s choice, then visit the Green Flag Award website now to register your vote.
