On Monday 16th May 2011, Dunstable elected its new Mayor. Councillor Claire Meakins-Jell is Dunstable's youngest ever Mayor and she is keen to inject her enthusiasm and commitment into her many engagements and fund raising activities over the coming year. In her acceptance speech she introduced herself to the town.
"I am 31 years of age, was born at our local Luton & Dunstable Hospital and still reside in Dunstable with my husband Ben. I attended local schools and went to university where I gained a degree in Criminology. For the past 9 years I have worked for a local authority and currently work as a Customer Services Team Manager.
I became a town councillor in 2004, because I wanted to give something back to a town that had given me so much growing up into adulthood. I believe I am the youngest Mayor to date, which for me personally is a real achievement.
I believe that it is essential to promote youth engagement in shaping services for and tackling issues that affect the town. It is also imperative that the interests and welfare of our established residents are protected and furthered.
We have started to see the green shoots of change in Dunstable and the Town Council has played an instrumental part in this. That having said, our town faces challenges that we must overcome to ensure that regeneration continues.
The Town Council provides an exciting and varied programme of mainly free events in the town for you all to attend and I encourage you to support these.
I feel very honoured and privileged to be Town Mayor and intend to show Dunstable off for the fantastic place that it truly is. If any local organisation, group, church or school has a function that they would like the Mayor to attend, please invite me.
In addition to civic duties, it is customary for the Mayor to raise money for nominated charities. This year is no exception and I have chosen three local organisations to support, Bedfordshire & Luton MIND, Signposts Dunstable & the Neonatal Care Unit Appeal at the Luton & Dunstable Hospital.
